Frequently Asked Questions – Scent Detection at Focus Dog Behaviour and Training

Scent detection taps into your dog’s natural ability to sniff and search. In class, your dog learns to identify a specific target scent and indicate when they’ve found it – just like a working detection dog, but adapted for pet dogs.

Any dog can do scentwork! It’s suitable for all breeds, ages, and ability levels – including shy dogs, busy dogs, older dogs, and dogs who can’t be off-lead. Nervous often thrive in scent classes, as the work is measured, focused, and confidence-boosting.

Yes! No prior experience is needed – I’ll guide you and your dog from the very beginning.

The class is fun and is a relaxed environment.  The class provides an opportunity for you to enjoy your dog using their natural talent - sniffing. This is a very rewarding and enjoyable process from start to finish for all involved.

Not all.  The scent courses are suitable for every breed, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, all are suitable.  After all, every dog has a nose.

Scent detection is suitable for any age of dog (provide all vaccinations are in place).  However, it is recommended that you complete the six week Puppy Course first.

We cover a variety of search types: pipes, chairs, bags, boxes, and vehicle or exterior searches depending on the level. Sessions are practical, fun, and focused on teamwork.

After completing the Bronze level, you cancel progress to Silver and Gold for new challenges.

Your dog's welfare must always take priority, and occasionally, despite all efforts, a group environment may just be too much for your dog. If this is the case you have the option to pay the difference towards 1-2-1 lessons.

No.  The rules of the class are very strict. A bite history precludes your dog from joining the class environment.  A 1-2-1 format would be more suitable.

You have access to the online content for six months. All the printable content is available for you to download/print and keep for as long as you would like.

The sessions are 45 minutes long. Your dog will really enjoy the class but there will be a lot of mental processing and will tire quite quickly.
